An Incredible Stepping Stone

At the end of 2016, EDS UI was given a shot to showcase the new batch’s debating abilities through BINUS Pro Ams. BINUS Pro Ams is a British Parliamentary debating competition organised by BINUS University, but with a unique twist. With each team, there should be a member who has broken in a debate tournament before, called a pro (short for professional), and a member who has never broken into a debate tournament, called an am (short for amateur). It was the last debating competition participated by EDS UI in 2016, starting on the 17th of December and ending on the 18th of December.

Our Pro-Ams teams are as follow. Imam Taufiq Ramadhan (Engineering, 2013) and Fauzi Insan Estiko (Economics, 2016) as UI A; Jessica Andriani (Economics, 2016) and Leonardi Ryan Andika (Economics, 2015) as UI B; and Kristi Ardiana (Law, 2013) along with Joshua Timothy (Economics, 2016) as UI C.

After going through four preliminary rounds, two of our teams managed to make it into the Breaking List, they are UI A and UI C, with UI A as #6th Breaking Team and UI C as #7th Breaking Team. Meanwhile, UI B placed 8th in the Team Tabs, only one spot away from breaking. Nevertheless, they put up a great fight. UI A and UI C continued their fight to the Eliminary Rounds and after a heated debate under the motion “TH supports Scorched Earth Policy”, UI A’s journey ended as pre-finalists. UI C trudged onwards, defending Opening Opposition with the motion “TH regrets the shift of Philippines bilateral relationship from US to China”. They emerged as Grand Finalists of BINUS Pro Ams. Despite not bringing home the gold, EDS UI is proud of our delegates’ achievements.

BINUS Pro Ams was an incredible stepping stone for members who have yet to be exposed to British Parliamentary debates to experience varsity debating while simultaneously learning from those who has better exposure in it.
